o.k. i really am ignorant here. i'm well versed in much firearm related things but don't know much about black powder shtuff.
i'm picking up a old navy 36 cal cap and ball, figured i'd enjoy getting into this. heres a few starter questions
1> i picked up a good deal on bunch of #11 caps thinking they were commonly used on most or all cap/ball. i'm told i need #10's for this gun. my understanding is 11's have more "pop" but fit the same. can i use them with less powder? 2> where can i find loading info. and supplies? |

| I am by no means an expert on BP guns, but if the theory is the same as smokeless, which I assume it would be,,,i would be careful. Changing the "pop" of the primer can radically change the burn rate of the powder causing a significant increase in pressure. Even using less powder, you can still run the risk of over pressurizing the chamber. As for supplies, notwithstanding the finding of a small shop that caters to BP, your best luck would be the internet or the big box stores. I have seen a lot more BP supplies in Cabelas and Bass Pro than I have seen in any gun store. Hope this helps. -GOTP |

I use the Dynamit Nobel No.1075 with my .36 cal Navy. Check Cabela's for supplies as they have some black power guns there.
For the amount of powder to use you need one of these for .36 cal gun.
Put your finger over the spout and hold upside down. Move the lever to fill the spout and that's your charge for each cylinder. |

Oh and for clean up do not leave the gun overnight. Clean as soon as you can. I use straight 409 to clean it followed by lots of oil. You need to get cleaning supplies just for the black powder, do not use the same brush and what not on your other guns.
And you must use a patch between the powder and ball as a spark from one cylinder can ignite the one next to it! |
